General Responsibilities
- Overall responsibility for coordinating all aspects of School operation
 - Chair of Management Committee
 - Chair of School Meeting
 
Teaching
- With Teaching Committee:  agreeing programme structures, teaching strategies, syllabi, etc., long-range planning
 - With Teaching Committee:  agreeing quality measures to ensure feedback and maintenance of standards
 - With Chair Teaching Committee:  staff duties re lecturing, problems classes, demonstrating, laboratories, tutorials, etc.
 - Examinations:  appointment of external examiners, Chair and conduct Board of Examiners
 - Preparation of Teaching Plans for University
 
Student Matters
- Attend Student-Staff Liaison Committe and facilitate response to matters raised
 - Tutorial reports - monitor and take action
 - Student problems - field those not covered by tutors
 
Administration
- Identification of administrative tasks
 - Devolvement of tasks to staff
 - Ensuring tasks devolved are satisfactorily performed
 - Overall workloads (Teaching, Research, Administration)
 - School Meetings:  Chair/facilitate responses
 - Fabric/facilities - long-term planning
 - Equipment - long-term planning
 - Records
 
Finance
- Preparation and Management of School budget
 - Preparation of School Business Plan for University
 - Devolvement and monitoring of School Budget to individual budget holders
 - Assessment of equipment needs and resultant financial planning
 
Personnel
- Appointment of staff (either as Chair or member of appropriate committee)
 - Staff appraisal
 - Staff promotion support to University (with advice) 
 - General staffing matters (resolution of interpersonal problems, sickness cover, etc.) taking advice of Personnel Office as appropriate
 - Staff development
 - Preparation of Staffing Plans for University
 - Preparation of Research Plans for University
 
Research
- With Research Committee:  long term research structure planning
 - With Research Committee:  Research Assessment Exercise planning
 - With Research Committee:  monitoring of research performance
 - With Research Committee:  Research student courses
 - Monitoring of research grant applications/reports
