computer.
The problem with Netscape 4
At the end of the last century, Netscape and Microsoft were fighting
to see who would provide the world's dominant browser (Microsoft
won!). In their rush to get their browser out first Netscape
introduced some
very
serious bugs. Many web-sites have serious problems when viewed
with Netscape4 (even the
World-Wide Web
Consortium's own pages) and most of those sites that do look OK
have resorted to turning their headers into giant images which
dramatically increase download times.
The solution (1)
Mozilla Firefox is a first-class browser
that runs on Windows 98 or later (or linux) and can be downloaded
free from their web-site. Alternatively, for US $10
including shipping they will send you a CD anywhere in the world. It's
worth it for tabbed browsing alone, and of course you can install it
on as many PCs as you like.
The solution for Windows 95
The predecessor to Mozilla Firefox was, rather confusingly, just
called 'Mozilla'.
Mozilla
runs under Windows 95 and is almost as up-to-date as Firefox.
The solution (2)
The Open CD is a collection of
free software for Windows. The disk is even cheaper than mozilla ($5
/ £3 including shipping) and includes both Mozilla Firefox and
mozilla. Trust us, it'll be the best £3 you'll ever spend on
your PC.
The solution (3)
If you prefer to stick with Netscape4 we apologise that our site may
not always look its best but we hope that all the pages will still be
readable.
Whichever browser you choose to use,
welcome to the School of Physics.
