Type I diabetes is associated with reduced BMD and increased fracture rates. However, the reasons for this are not totally clear and further research is required. This studentship will investigate, in Type I diabetes, the relationship between age of onset; duration of symptoms prior to diagnosis, diabetic control, body composition, physical activity on BMD. By pinpointing potential risk factors for low BMD interventions to optimise BMD can then be investigated to improve the long term bone health and reduce the morbidity and mortality associated with low trauma fractures.
