Plasmonics and Magneto-Optics

Prof. W L Barnes and Dr V V Kruglyak

The combination of magnetic materials and plasmonics is potentially a powerful one, but has so far been little explored. It offers the potential of a powerful way to both probe magnetism on the nanoscale and to use magnetic fields to control light.

In this experimental PhD project, you will build upon and learn from the extensive expertise in plasmonics, magneto-optics and nano-magnetism available in Exeter to advance a ground-breaking research program at the interface between plasmonics and magneto-optics. Ultimately, this project would also allow us to exploit largely a missing aspect of plasmonics, the means of control, facilitating demonstration of a few proof-of-concept ideas in the emerging research field.
